 ABOUT PATAGONIA
|
The striking and barren Patagonia region stretches out from the southern part of Puerto Montt to the Island of Tierra del Fuego. Its colonization period was one of the longest and most dangerous due to the extreme weather conditions.

The rainy season, with its low temperatures and cold wind, makes this part of the world one of the hardest and severe places to live. Due to its harsh conditions, it is often called the "green desert", a name given by the explorer Charles Darwin.

Punta Arenas is the capital of the region. Built along side the Magellan Strait and across from the island of "Tierra del Fuego", the city has over 120.000 inhabitants and the only airport for the region. A city tour will take you to museums that relate the history of the city during the colonization period.

250 kilometers to the north lies the city of Puerto Natales, located along side the spectacular "Last Hope" fjord. From this point, day trips are scheduled to the incredible "Balmaceda" and "Serrano" glaciers.

| Keep moving north 100 kilometers and you will arrive at the famous “Torres del Paine” National Park, an outdoor paradise that will satisfy any hiker’s desire for trekking, walking, or camping. Numerous lakes make up a good portion of the park, including Pehoé, |

(crystal clear waters), Nordenskjold, Sarmiento, Toro and finally Grey, with a glacier of the same name. Visitors can also enjoy the view of icebergs looming close to the shoreline.

The wildlife here is rich and diverse; guests are sure to see condors, guanacos, ñandúes and foxes. Bird-watchers will enjoy the several species found here, and the luckiest animal aficionado might even get a glimpse at a Chilean puma. Rivers along this region are suitable for great fishing trips and its rocky mountains are a climbers dream.

With its stark and barren landscape, Tierra del Fuego makes it easy to forget that this is still part of South America. The spectacular channels and fjords remind one of Norway or Newfoundland.

We make sure that guests are sure to see the magnificent glaciers at the "Cordillera de Darwin".

Due to the extreme meteorological conditions, we advise that you bring suitable clothing. A visit of at least 4 days is recommended so you can enjoy all the wonders in this fantastic region of Chile.
